Fish ball noodles seem to be all the rage in Johor Bahru, especially with heavy hitters like Ah Koong Restaurant. Another one of the major players where fish ball noodles in Johor is concerned is Restoran Kit Lai. The story behind the restaurant is quite similar to that of Ah Koong Restaurant. It all started with Nyew Yeok Moe, a Johor native who learned her family's recipe of traditional hand made fish ball, which has been passed down for generations. At the age of 22, she then took it upon herself to serve these traditional recipes for fish ball noodles as well as yong tau foo in a food stall for a number of years during the 80's. After these few years with the great response from regulars and an ever growing customer base, both Yeok Moe and her husband opened up their very first restaurant, Kit Lai, in the year 2000 and have continued to open up more outlets around Johor in recent years.
While the fish ball noodles and yong tau foo steal the show here, there are a number of other noteworthy dishes to be had here. Some of these include pork dishes like the braised pork rice, vinegar pork trotter, which are both cooked for one and a half hours to get tender and flavourful chunks of pork. Besides this, there are also noodle dishes like the Sarawak dry kon lao mee, and the pumpkin flavour mee hoon kueh.
In short, if you're looking for a trusted name in serving fish ball noodles and other Chinese dishes, Restoran Kit Lai is certainly the place to go.
