Majority of the population in Yong Peng is from the Foonchow community. If you are passing through Yong Peng, why not take a short visit to
the small town to try out the unique Foochow cuisine. If you ask the locals on
where to eat, they would probably direct you to Yuan Yean Fishball Eating House
tucked along Main Road and neighbouring the Caltex petrol station. Interior
wise, the décor is pretty much straight forward, simple, well-ordered, and hygienic.
The eatery provides three different dining section which consists of an air-conditioned,
a non-air conditioned and an al fresco area. The place is also equipped with
clean and comfortable washrooms.
Yuan Yean pride themselves in serving one
of the best fish balls in town with 100% handmade Ikan Parang fish balls, with no
MSG or preservatives added. In every bite, you can taste the delicious fresh
fish flavour along with the its tender and bouncy texture. Apart from that, the
restaurant has something extra to offer – Foochow fish balls. The dish has its
own unique taste that is similar to wanton except that the minced pork is wrapped
in fish paste instead of wanton skin. You will love the unique flavours that
combine both fish and pork together in one item. This dish can be pretty hard
to find unless you are in the area where the Foochow people live.
Don’t leave the restaurant without trying the Otak Otak Muar. The delicacy is packed and full of fresh Ikan Tenggiri meat combines together with coconut milk and some delicious spices. This might not be theirs as they got supplies from a leading otak otak Muar maker, but this one is definitely a must-try. If you are interested in trying authentic Foonchow delicacies, you now know where to head to.
