Mods Café is probably the most retro coffee
shop in Melaka. From the exterior, you probably would miss it due to its rustic
looking shopfront that looks like it has already closed down. However, do not
be fooled by that. The café is actually open (there’s a hanging open sign) and
the purpose of closing the door is to shield from the heat and prevent the air
conditioner breeze from dissipating. Opened in 2010, the place is located near
Cheng Hoon Teng Temple and is quite secluded amongst the shop.
The main attraction of this place has got
to be the bright orange 1978 Volkswagon that is park proudly inside the café.
The wagon was used to sell coffee long ago before the owner decided to turn it
into a coffee parlour. Beside the main retro piece, the place is also filled
with vintage and antique decors along with wood planks and brick walls. The
place is rather small and can probably fit not more than 6 groups of people. Despite
being retro and antique, this place uses advanced technology coffee machines.
Mods Cafe’s coffee roasting machine shares a room with drum set of Khow which result in certainly 100% pure and fresh coffee. Here, they offer not less than 30 types of beverages from hot to blended. For coffee lovers, go for their double espresso that is wonderfully thick with strong coffee aroma. You can also opt for the Caffe Latte that gives you a nice creamy and milky taste to it. Desserts like Tiramisu cake and Creme Brulee is also available for grab. While you are exploring the unique streets of Chinatown, Melaka, why not stop by this quirky café just to enjoy a nice cuppa and maybe a few tourist shots to show your family and friends back at home.
