Originated from Ipoh, Chong Kok Wah Tuo
Guan is a pretty famous herbal dessert restaurant tucked away in the rather
busy area, Jalan Pudu. Regulars love stopping by just to get a bowl of herbal
dessert to cool down from a hot sunny day. CKWTG serves a wide range dessert
that are usually prepared for take-away. One of their signature sweet dish is
the Gui Ling Gao. Everyone has a love hate relationship with this one due to its
plainly bitter jelly that comes from herbal elements. Fun fact: legend has it
that one of the ingredients used in making it is turtle powder. However, in
today’s world, we doubt such thing is legal anymore.
In every bite, you will get a firm jelly texture with a strong, almost citrus punch to it. This bowl of bitter jelly is perfect for people who do not really fancy sweet treats and wants to cleanse their palate after a big meal. If you cannot stand the bitterness, you can always add some honey or syrup to sweeten the dish a bit. Some people compares this dish to life. To them, even if life is bitter, God still gives you a little sweetness in life when you are about to give up. We think that’s pretty accurate. Apart from the famous Gui Ling Gao, you can also opt for the steamed egg pudding, snow frog’s jelly, bird’s nest dessert and even bottled herbal tea. Everything that you can see on their menu screams old school, especially traditional tonics for health.
