Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory is
one of the oldest and well known traditional bakery in Johor offering fresh breads,
pastries and fragrant banana cakes. Nestled in between old shop lots at Jalan
Tan Hiok Nee, this bakery has been around for over 80 years supplying
delectable buns, cakes and biscuits in a charcoal oven just as the founder had
done in his native Hainan, China. Before 12pm, you can see masses of people
standing in line outside the bakery just to get their hands on the so very
delicious banana cakes.
The interior might not be fancy with pretty
transparent glass to display their baked goods, but it is the items are being
displayed in baskets instead. The place mostly consists of large wood-fired
oven that is used to bake all of their scrumptious cakes and breads. You might
be surprise that the method used in preparing them can actually affect its
taste. The cakes are also perfectly and evenly sliced by hand.
If you decide to drive over to Hiap Joo
Bakery, be sure to get their very famous banana cakes. The cake is simply
delicious with no added preservatives, finely sweet, light, spongy, airy, moist,
aromatic, and very reasonably priced. Tip: Keep your banana cake in the fridge
overnight and consume them the next morning. You will find that the cake tastes
better – more fragrant, soft, and moist.
Another best thing about this bakery is their Coconut Buns. In every bite you will get very nice fresh coconut shreds with gula Melaka infolded by a fluffy bun – juicy and not excessively sweet. Being one of only two bakeries left in Johor that uses wood-fired oven, this one is certainly one of Malaysia’s must try bakeries.
