Right smack in the middle of one of Malaysia’s hottest tourist destinations in Melaka, Jonker street, lies Jonker 88; a restaurant known for serving up local and Malaccan favourites. Since its inception in 1997, this restaurant has long been a favourite of native Malaccans and tourists alike, as shown by the fact that this place is known for having long queues just to even begin ordering your food at the designated stall. Speaking of stalls, the restaurant works on a more self-service basis, whereby after paying for the food at one, diners are then expected to pick up their food right after as there aren’t any serving staff members around.
Jonker 88 prides itself on being a museum cafe, especially since there are countless artefacts and pieces of memorabilia attached all over the walls, adding extra charm to the bustling space.
However, it would be a shame to talk about this restaurant without shedding some light on the cendol that has blown foodies and tourists away. The baba cendol here is noted for its thick generous amount of palm sugar, often heavy enough to split the mound of ice that its smeared on top of. Their durian cendol is just as famous, with durian chunks put into the sugary mix.
So it is very clear that Jonker 88 cannot be missed if you happen to be in Melaka. It's more than just a food trail, it's an experience of its own.
