A good bowl of Penang style prawn mee may seem to only be available in Penang (hence the name) but here is a joint that serves it just as good. Kedai Kopi Juat Lye is tucked away in the hidden corners
in Melaka where only locals seem to know about. Situated in the original settlement of the Baba Nyonya people, the
food here are all about care and process that take up a lot of time but
the end product is so, so worth it.
The famous Prawn Noodles here at Kedai Kopi Juat Lye
is served with a generous amount of toppings. Originally it wasn’t so, but due
to customers’ request, the owner decided to lessen the noodle and add in more
ingredients like pork slices, full sized prawns, fish cakes and a whole bunch
of kangkung, making this already fulfilling dish even better. The soup is
freshly boiled everyday for hours ensure the abundant taste of prawns that are
all natural without the help of MSG. The homemade sambal served along took
hours and hours to make in the authentic style of Nyonya cooking and is a
wonderful addition to the experience. The Prawn Noodles is the main star but Kedai
Kopi Juat Lye is also known to serve great Nyonya Laksa.
Kedai
kopi literally translates as coffee shop so expect good coffee to be served
here. Usual local style like the strong black ‘kao’ or ‘kaw’, and the sweeter blend
of coffee, tea and condensed milk in ‘cham’ are few of the hits here. Still
maintaining a decent price for everyone to enjoy, be sure to make a detour here
sometime soon.
