Medan Selera Stadium is a food court in the Simee area in
Ipoh that’s been a host to numerous famous food stall for more than 2 decades.
Some of these include Yoon Kee, Min Chee’s wantan mee, and an exhaustive list
of other stalls. One of the stalls to take note in this exhaustive list is
stall 39, named Makanan & Minuman Simee 39. Unlike a large number of the
stalls at Medan Selera Stadium, stall 39 is only available to serve the lunch
crowds, who are predominantly comprised of residents in the immediate area.
As far as the food is concerned, the stall specialises in
Hakka yong tau foo, fish ball noodles, beef brisket noodles (often referred to
as ngau lam meen), and beef stew. The beef noodles served here are quite
similar to the beef noodles served at Restoran S S Fatt, where the noodles and
chunks of beef brisket are submerged in a clear broth made from radish. The
bowl is also heaped with plenty of spring onions and slices of radish in the
bowl for more freshness and texture. The yong tau foo here follows a similar
trend, where the springy and flavourful fishballs together with the bean curd sheets
are submerged in a clear broth, which is also topped with spring onions. Then
there’s the beef stew, which difficult to come across in general. The stew is
on the thicker side, with plenty of chunks of meat and vegetables to be had.
In short, if you’re looking to sample some of the great food
the locals enjoy outside of the tourist riddled city, then heading to Medan
Selera Stadium to try out one of the many stalls here (including stall 39) is
your best bet.
