Sun Tong Chew Bak Kut Teh is nestled among the busy streets of Ipoh’s city centre. Do not be fooled by its humble looking facade, as the place is favoured by many locals and is said to serve one of the best Bak Kut Teh in Ipoh. Do come early, as most of the tables including those on the pathway outside the shop are always filled up. The interior of the shop is simple but comfortable, with plastic chairs and wooden tables. It is definitely a good place for friends and family to hang out and chit chat over a scrumptious meal.
Their Bak Kut Teh comes in a clay pot to keep the soup warm.
The broth is aromatic and perfectly flavoured with herbs—mainly coriander. The
ingredients include pork belly, pork rib, pork innards and deep fried bean
curd. The pork innards are crunchy and appetizing while the pork belly has the
perfect ratio of tender meat and fats. They fill the pot to the brim, so much
so that you can barely see the soup. It is then showered with a generous amount
of coriander toppings, adding to the total flavour. Do also sample their Dry
Bak Kut Teh, which comes in similar ingredients to their soup variety. However,
this version is flavoured with thick, slightly spicy black soy sauce that will
certainly make you reach for that second helping of white rice.
Add some fibre to your meal with a plate of Blanched Glass
Lettuce which is sprinkled with shallots and sesame oil. Do take note that they
only serve their special Yam Rice on Fridays.
