Best Wantan Mee in Penang

Written by Updated ago

Wantan Mee is a delicious serving of noodles in either dry or soup form. The dry variant uses a dark soy base while the soup traditionally comes with chicken or pork broth. However, things are a little different in Penang as stalls here offers a new variant - white or colourless dry. It somehow is much milder as compared to the dark soy sauce base but certainly has more depth. Regardless of which, we understand that you will enjoy the list of best wantan mee in Penang that we've compiled.

Rankings of all participants as visible on our listings are solely voted by you, our beloved readers. With that said, we would encourage you to please vote for your preferred participants in order to ensure their rightful positions ranking-wise on our portal. Thank you!

The name truly stands for itself, where they serve a good plate of wantan mee with a little twist. The noodles aren't as hard or dense like most, but rather, it is soft, chewy and somewhat translucent. The dry sauce too isn't very savoury but the wantan noodles does soak up all the flavour, which is great to say the least. The wantan is large and it comes with char siew and mushrooms.

    Tips

You can ask for more gravy.

    Things to expect

    A straight-forward set-up, nothing too fancy.

    Best with

This place has probably garnished enough fame through The Star newspaper for being one of the oldest, if not cheapest wantan mee in Penang. He is also famous for retaining the price of his wantan at RM0.50 each for several consecutive years even though there was a fuel and vegetables price hike. As for the wantan mee, you can expect the same amount of generosity in terms of flavour and portion.

    Tips

    Waze or Google Maps there.

    Things to expect

Cheap wantan in a humble home.

Kedai Kopi Gou Lou is also another treasure in Penang that offers pretty good wantan mee and traditional kopi O. The noodles may not be as springy as others but it certainly does absorb the sauce or broth really well due to its thicker diameter. The wantan itself is filled to the brim and chewing into one of these things are extremely satisfying. Juicy, succulent and full of meat. Also, do not forget to pair with their Kopi O if you have the chance.

    Tips

Several other dishes such as char kuey teow and loh mee are worth trying as well.

    Things to expect

    Casual semi-hawker setting.

    Best with

    Kopi o.

Tai Wah Coffee House may not look like much from outside, but we all know that those type of coffee shop are the ones that serve the best food. The wantan mee at Lebuh Acheh may not be the easiest to locate, but it certainly is worth the trouble. The stall is operated by an elderly couple, just right in the middle of the three-foot-way, where tables are set alongside the stall for a quick and convenient dining set-up. The wantan mee, either dry or soup comes with a generous amount of noodles, fried dumplings and char siew. The vegetables may be little less but asking for more incurs no charges at all.

    Tips

    Don't forget the chili!

    Things to expect

Tables set up along the three foot walkway.

    Best with

    A bowl of dumpling soup.

Finding this place isn't gonna be easy. As you have to search for a makeshift coffee shop in along the Jelutong Market. However, do not worry as they only sell wantan mee, that is how good the business is. Featuring noodles that are springy and bouncy along with a choice of delicious dark soy sauce base or clear broth, juicy wantan and a side of vegetables. Customers can also choose to have a mix of wantan noodles and vermicelli as well.

    Tips

    Come early.
