Tucked between Jalan Syed Putra and Jalan Istana sits the famous Ikan Bakar Bellamy, a row of stalls specializes in the ever-delicious ikan bakar that is loved by many especially the locals. This is the exact place crowds would gather to get their hands on selection of grilled fish ranging from ikan pari, tilapia, terubok and many more. However, within the many stalls there Gerai Mak Alang, as it is known as, seems to be the finest choice among them. Situated at the end of the lane, assortments of fishes and seafood are offered with superb taste coating them even if they are plainly grilled.
Unlike any other barbecued fish that is typically charcoal grille, Mak Alang adds a little twist in cooking the seafood by wrapping them in banana leaf ahead and later be grilled over a large hot pan. Squids, prawns, or even cockles are always at hand if patrons fancy something other than ikan bakar and they are no less appetizing than the folks-favourite. Although grilling would require a highly tip-top skill as to not over-cook or perhaps burn them, what attract attention to Gerai Mak Alang are their delectable sambals to select from in completing the dishes, including the local’s favourite significant to every generations in Malaysia – tempoyak. Typically the ikan bakar or seafood would be eaten with plain rice or nasi campur of which the place also houses some. Like many other crowds hot spot, be prepared for the place to be swarmed with people especially on weekends but the extra work in getting a seat will be worth it.
