Next to the famous Fort Cornwallis in Penang is the Padang Kota Lama food court. While this food court hold many different stalls that share the business and dining space, it is without a doubt that Hameed ‘Pata’ Mee Sotong dominates every other stall by the simple fact that there’s a strong likelihood that almost every table in the food court will have at least one of his famous plates of mee sotong. The stall has been around since 1978 and is currently being run by the second generation, namely by owner Shahul Hameed Syed Mohamed.

When it comes to this well-known plate of mee sotong, an interesting to note is about this stall is that the cook doesn’t prepare each order individually but dishes out the noodles quicker by cooking in big batches. As far as the selection goes, there are only two variations-the wet mee rebus with a thick and spicy gravy, and the dry mee goreng. Both of these plates will feature a decent helping of the sotong sambal that’s sweet and spicy, which helps set it apart from other plates of mee rebus and mee goreng, as well as a wedge of lemon to add more flavour to the plate of noodles. For those looking to indulge in this dish just a little more, more noodles or mee rebus gravy (in the event mee rebus was ordered) can be topped up.

So if you’re looking for one of the best noodle dishes with some spicy sotong to go along with it while in Penang, heading to Hameed ‘Pata’ Special Mee is your best bet.
