Restaurant Tung Lok Hin is nestled in the Ipoh city centre off Jalan Bendahara and is famed for their Bak Kut Teh. The interior of the restaurant is simple with plastic chairs and wooden tables typical of hawker-style shops in Ipoh. Upon entering, you will be greeted with rushed welcomes from waiters darting here and there in orange shirts. The place is usually quite packed during peak hours. The menu is displayed on the wall in Mandarin.
Their classic Bak Kut Teh soup is definitely a must try.
Coming in a clay pot to keep the soup warm, the broth is clear but well-flavoured
with herbs. It is laden with pieces of bean curd sheet, fried bean curd, pork
rib, pork belly and pork innards. A generous amount of coriander is thrown into
the soup. The pork rib is tender and juicy while the pork innards are crunchy
and appetizing. To add to the flavour, dip the ingredients into the
accompanying condiments of chilli and chopped garlic.
Alternatively, you can try their Dry Bak Kut Teh. Restaurant
Tung Lok Hin is said to be the first shop that serves the dry version of Bak
Kut Teh in Ipoh. It is nothing like the conventional soup version. While it is also
flavoured with herbs, the ingredients include slices of pork, dried cuttlefish,
ladies finger and dried chilli.
Pair your meal with the customary Yau Char Kuey that goes perfectly
with the soup and bowls of white rice. For those who are interested, they also
serve Yam Rice. If you are looking to add some fibre to your diet, do sample
their Blanched Vegetables, which is drizzled with shallots and oyster sauce.
