Hong Kee Confectionery is a precious gem
for Ipoh folks. It is not a restaurant, nor a café, but instead it is a
small humble stall located inside Weng Seng Coffee Shop located along Jalan
Datuk Onn Jaafar. This little joint is well-known for serving one of the best
egg tarts in Ipoh. Look out for a yellow signage with a red crown on it, and
that is exactly where the magic happens. Shat Keh Ma and Gai Dan Gou are also
other popular items that you can find at the stall.
At first glance, you can already guess that
the egg tarts are going to be delicious – silky yellow egg custard in the
middle and beautifully baked pastry on the side. The pastry is flaky and
crumbles in your mouth when bitten, while the golden egg custard filling is
simply creamy and velvety. Hong Kee’s egg custard has that advantage in terms
of a more natural flavour from the eggs. Shat Keh Ma is also another crowds’
favourite. One block of Shat Keh Ma can measure up to 5″ x 4.5″ and weight
slightly more than the common ones. It is simply delightful with the crunchy
flour infused with the scrumptious rich egg fragrance and taste, tangled and glazed
with shining caramelized syrup that is not excessively sugary.
Here at Hong Kee, they do not hold back when it comes to the ingredients. Be it Shat Keh Ma, egg tarts, or Gai Dan Gou (egg cake rolls with kaya), you can really taste the eggs in each of them! Hint: you might want to come before 9am to avoid any disappointments. Hong Kee’s pastries are so popular and delicious that if you don’t make any order or come before 9am, all of their signature items will be sold out by then. Good luck getting your hands on one of these mouth-watering pastries!
