If you are around the Bukit Mertajam area,
you probably want to stop by Jalan Pasar to try one of the oldest and most
popular rojak stall in the heart of Bukit Mertajam named Rojak Orang Hock. There
are three parlours at the same spot selling pretty much the same thing and
their names are also almost the same - 黑人罗惹 (Orang Hitam), 白人罗惹 (Orang Putih) and 黑白人罗惹 (Orang Hitam Putih). However,
the locals think that this particular joint was the first rojak stall in the
area and they are serving the most authentic Rojak.
For tourists, they might feel like all
three stalls tastes the same, but they are all different in terms of quality
and the amount of crushed peanuts offered. At Rojak Orang Hock, you will get a
much better fruit quality and gives a lot of crushed peanuts. Though it is
located inside one of the dirtiest coffee shop in town, the stall itself is
very clean and hygienic. If you are still feeling uneasy to have it there, you
can always take away, like most of the customers do.
Regulars go crazy over their special rojak
sauce until the owner decided to sell the sauce in packages for patrons to
bring home as hand gifts or simply to enjoy it at home. The sauce is packed in
small plastic tubs and perfect for dessert after a nice home cook meal. So if
you are want to taste BM authentic rojak and probably bring home one or two tub
of rojak sauce, we highly recommend Rojak Orang Hock.
