Stepping into the doors of Kedai Kopi Lai Foong, it will seem like as if you had travelled back in time to the 1950s. Furnished with sturdy marble and wooden furnitures, Lai Foong has been operating for 60 years since 1956. Until today, this old Chinese coffee shop located near Central Market still doesn’t fail to attract the crowd thanks to the three infamous food served here in Lai Foong. The crowd could be a little overwhelming during lunch hours and parking could be a hassle at the area, but all is worth.
Operating since Lai
Foong was established, the Beef noodles here is made with an 80 year old
Hainanese family recipe. The stall was first ran by the father of the current
owner up until he retired but the taste of the Beef noodles still remains. With
a thick hearty broth boiled for hours with all the essence of the beef, you can
choose to pair it with flat rice noodles, yellow noodles or vermicelli. Besides
the Beef Noodles, another must try would be the Char Kuey Teow. Cooked by an
elderly uncle, the Char Kuey Teow here is a mixture of flat and yellow noodles
stir-fried with Chinese sausages, eggs, chives and bean sprouts. The smokiness
of the dish would be ready to tackle your senses straight from the wok.
The Wantan Mee here is
as popular as the beef noodles, the bouncy egg noodles topped with glazy Char
Siew is definitely a must try. You might not be a fan of Chicken Rice but you
have to also order the Roast Pork here which the crunch is what people are
crazy over.
