For 4
generations, the Kluang Railway Station Canteen had been serving train
travellers who are waiting to board or just disembarked. Still maintaining the
original café, the owners opened two more branches in the area and one in
Selangor. Rail Canteen is operated by a fourth generation member of the Lim
family, aiming to bring you the original taste of Kluang. Now Kluang locals
working in Petaling Jaya can have a taste of home while others get to try
something new.
The place is spacious and comfortable with the huge glass doors and windows bringing in ample sunlight. With wooden chairs and black frames, the interior replicates a railway café but with some modern touches. The menu is traditional with some fusion elements, with ingredients and recipes mostly from the original coffee shop in Kluang.
Their best
seller is the Nasi Lemak, a Malaysian staple food. You can choose to have it
with Ayam Goreng, Ayam Berempah, Ayam Masak Merah or Rendang Kambing. With the
Nasi Lemak Ayam Berempah, you get to choose from an assortment of sambals:
cockles, squids, anchovies, prawns and onion. The cockles sambal is robust with
a sweet flavour from the cockles. The freshly fried groud nuts and anchovies
are crunchy while the rice is fluffy and fragrant. Do also give the Bun Bakar
(roasted bun) a try. The bun is cut open and slathered with a generous amount
of kaya with small cubes of cold butter. It is absolutely delicious, with the
sweetness of kaya complimenting the slightly salty butter perfectly.
Pair your
meal with an aromatic cup of Kluang Coffee that is creamy and not overly sweet.
