The Canteen is a food court located in the da:men mall in USJ
1, Subang Jaya. Getting it’s start in January 2016, the food court offers a few
things that make it stand out from other mall based food courts. For starters,
there are 4 different sections in the food court, which are more catered for
purpose than type of cuisine (which is the common practice in most food
courts). These sections include the kids area which has a play area and toys,
the youth area which has large tables and plug points which workds great for
college students who want to do work and have a meal simultaneously, the
executive section which is more quiet and easy going for a more business
friendly setting, and the al fresco section for those who smoke and/or prefer
fresh air.
Naturally, a food court is only as good as the stalls in it,
and it is certainly the case for The Canteen. There are 13 stalls to choose
from here such as “A’ Famosa Chicken Rice” for chicken rice dishes such as
chicken rice balls, “Old State Kopitiam”, “Seaweed Club”, “La Italia” for
Italian dishes like pizza and pasta, “Noodle Houz”, “MM Best Portuguese Grilled
Fish”, “Dough” for baked goods, “Saw’s Claypot and Sizzling”, “Oyster King”, “The
West” for western dishes such as roasted chicken, “Padang Yong Tau Foo”, “Kempunan
SNC Nasi Lemak Nyonya & Mee Rebus”, and “Sip n’ Chill” for drinks. From
looking at this list, it seems quite clear that there’s a strong Malaccan
presence here with the “A’ Famosa Chicken Rice”, “MM Best Portuguese Grilled
Fish”, and “Kempunan SNC Nasi Lemak Nyonya & Mee Rebus”. This is a welcome
change from the run-of-the-mill stalls that are all too common in these types
of food courts.
