Japanese food is one of the most celebrated cuisines around the world and we can presumptuously say that regular runners like sushi, sashimi and udon are only a slice of a cake. Teppanyaki is another masterpiece that is often overlooked but it’s absolutely gratifying. The name of the dish comes from the bonding of two words that describes the whole scenario – Teppan which means iron plate, whereas yaki means grilled, pan-fried or broiled. As interesting as it sounds, mélange of meats, seafood and vegetables are deftly done on the iron griddle with different sauces and ingredients. The best part? It’s usually visible to diners, offering a hypnotical appeal that sets you drooling helplessly. Keep reading to find out where in Penang!

Arashi Shabu Shabu
This restaurant may be a new kid on the block yet has made quite a storm in the Japanese food scene in Penang. What reels you in at once is the interior that spells contemporary and comfort. The menu is fairly extensive but if you’re in the mood for teppanyaki, boy oh boy, you’re sure in safe hand. Choices include grilled saba fish, beef teriyaki, chicken, grilled tilapia, pork, salmon and squid. You could bring over the most distinctive diner out there, yet it’s impossible to pick the winner. Another winning point here is the sizzling griddle is brought over to the table with the dish of your choice, egg, fresh vegetables, corn, rice and miso soup, and you can choose to baste the whole ensemble with the original or spicy sauce for that additional oomph. It might sound like a close cousin to dakgalbi but it’s a whole different story here, in a good way.

Queens Hall
If varieties are what you are after, Queens Hall is the place to be. Stepping into to food mecca is sure to have you weak at knees. Among the stalls that always draws a beeline is the Teppanyaki, where a gargantuan griddle often catches the attention. Be it the denizens of the ocean or marinated meats, nothing leaves the scorching griddle without perfection, both in terms of flavour and portion. Apart from the freshness of the dish and astute combination of flavours, the amazing depth of smokiness is another reason to scuttle over for seconds or thirds. A mound of white rice completes your indulgence and do ask for chopped chillies for a spicy kick.
