Best Ayam Penyet in Johor Bahru (JB)

Written by Updated ago

By now, most people must have heard or even tasted the popular Javanese dish. For the uninitiated, ayam penyet literally means flattened (smashed) chicken - nothing to do with a live chicken getting ran over by a lorry. The chicken is marinated then deep-fried (or roasted) before smashed with a pestle or wooden mallet. You can easily savour ayam penyet throughout Malaysia and if you’re in Johor, here is where you can track this delicious poultry dish down!

    Ayam Penyet Z&Z

Although the rice and the side dishes such as fried tofu and soup are nothing to shout about, the chicken is awesome. The skin is crispy and not too oily. The white meat on the inside is thankfully moist and soft. The sambal belacan is quite watery, but still decent enough as a spicy dip for the chicken. Other penyet dishes served on the menu includes puyuh and ikan keli.

    Tips

    This restaurant allows phone reservation.

    Things to expect

Small amount of rice in the ayam penyet dish. Best to order extra rice if you’re a big eater.

    Best with

    Fruit juice.

    RM7.00

    Restoran Pinang

A popular dinner spot among UTM (Universiti Teknologi Malaysia) students, Restoran Pinang serves one of the best ayam penyet in Skudai. Here, “ayam tua” (old chicken) is used because of its exceptionally leaner and juicier meat. The chicken is perfectly fried until crisp and golden brown. Not to forget, the sambal belacan dip is spicy enough to complement with the delectable ayam penyet and white rice!

    Tips

Avoid focusing on their char kuey teow, and come for their penyet dish instead.

    Things to expect

    Casual restaurant, reasonably-priced meal.

    Best with

    Teh “O” Ais Limau.

    RM6.00

A favourite hangout among the locals and foreign tourists, Banafee Village offers a wide variety of fusion food ranging from Malay, Chinese to Javanese cuisines. Speaking of Javanese, the restaurant is also known for its signature Nasi Ayam Penyet. Although the side dishes as fried tofu and tempeh are average, the chicken is tasty enough to offset its shortcoming.

    Tips

You can make a reservation as well.

    Things to expect

Extensive menu, noisy environment filled with live band during nighttime.

    Best with

    Pepes (Javanese version of “otak-otak”).
