Visually arresting, robust flavours that impress your taste buds and a price tag that does no harm to your budget, a good bowl of asam pedas will certainly wipe you out – in a good way. The sour notes of the dish come from tamarind juice, or also known as asam in Malay, while the hefty usage of chillies make it really spicy, which is translated to pedas. Now you have an idea how this luscious dish got its name from. Another triumph is the variety of fishes that can be employed into the red gravy, each infusing a distinctive flavour and picking a winner is rather impossible. From casual stalls to classy restaurants, and everything in between, we have curated a list of asam pedas spots that simply don’t go wrong.

Sajian Baginda
On a tight budget yet your stomach demands a good serving of asam pedas? Then this humble-looking stall is where you should cannonball over. Burrowed between a bustling food court, choices are aplenty but it’s common to witness asam pedas topping the chart. The main appeal is a variety of fishes lounging in crimson-red curry in their respective pots – pomfret, seabass, stingray and catfish. The gravy offers a melange of spicy and sour flavours while the fish just flakes off the bone with ease. As much as we love a good bowl of asam pedas, we also crave for a decent selection of sides to go along, and your wish is certainly fulfilled.

Serai
If none of the fish breeds is up your alley in the asam pedas scene, then this charming restaurant has got you covered. Upon stepping in you’ll be rewarded with a classy and clean atmosphere that differs from other contenders in the list. What so special about their asam pedas? Oxtail it is! Yes you read that right. Tender and flavoursome chunks of oxtail are shrouded with a thick and rich gravy, then sealed with a sprinkling of chopped chives. It’s a little expensive but looking at what’s on offer, it’s worth each penny. Oh yes, don’t forget to leave some space for desserts.

Bawang Merah
Standing in the heart of Subang Jaya, Bawang Merah has been a goldmine to relish a range of local delights and authentic Malay kuihs. Despite the huge crowd during lunch and dinner hours, the ambience isn’t bustling, thanks to the large seating capacity and homely interior. Varieties are the main appeal here and among the standout is their asam pedas. Fresh fillets of stingray are cooked in a gravy that hits the right spot between spicy and sour. Since the prices are wallet-friendly, feel free to replete your plate with other dishes like sotong sambal and salted egg for optimal satisfaction. For a dose of heat, do include their sambal too.
