Best Nyonya Restaurants in Penang

Written by Updated ago

Penang is known to everyone as one of the birthplaces of the Peranakan culture. The Baba-Nyonya culture is a large part of Penang's heritage, so it should come as no surprise that there are many Nyonya restaurants all over little Penang. Nyonya food in itself is very different and exquisite, and when cooked traditionally, each dish becomes a distinctive recipe. Even the simplest style of chicken curry and rice is cooked differently when done the Nyonya way - with the addition of more herbs and spices, thus giving it an added dimension of comfort food.

If you are the kind who prefers to wind down the day with some homey food, Mum's Nyonya Cuisine would be just right for you. This small-sized eatery can only house a small capacity of diners, so they don't usually do big crowds but it's still usually packed with returning customers anyway. They serve very authentic Nyonya food with strictly traditional in-house recipes. Their menu has most of the known (and some unique) Nyonya dishes; namely jiu hu char, loh bak, curry kapitan, inchi kabin and otak-otak.

    Tips

Penang is a warm city so you might want to opt for the indoor seats (unless you like feeling sweaty, then feel free to dine at the outdoor seating area).

    Things to expect

Nyonya food which tastes just like home.

    Best with

There is also a wide selection of salads such as the kerabu kacang botol (bean sprout salad).

Visit Penang and everyone will recommend you Ivy's place. It is widely famous despite being located in a old converted house. Don't let the shopfront fool you - the restaurant may not be fancy but it is certainly cosy. Ivy's place is simple and straight with no fuss, but their dishes are rather the other way round. Most of the dishes are prepared thoroughly with a lot of effort, especially the Jiu Hu Char. Meals here also very affordable, and they offer many kinds of lunch sets that come with drinks.

    Tips

Ask for the belacan to go with your Jiu Hu Char at no extra cost.

    Things to expect

Pork-free and value for money eatery set in a clean and casual place.
