Sup Ekor or literally translated as Oxtail Soup, is an old-fashioned comfort dish that has been losing its fame among the younger generations these days. Some claim it’s a traditional Hainanese cuisine while other say the English discovered the flavourful combination back in the 1960s, whoever it is, we are grateful to you. The Western take is rather a fusion of peppery and earthy punch. While, our Malaysian version kicks in with a little tangy and zesty flavour (with lemongrass, lime, chili padi), just the way we like it. Wholesome, simple and soul-warming, there is handful restaurants still serving this savoury delight, not a surprise in a state that takes heritage and history up its sleeves.

Mr Pork
Fairly a new contender to the Western food scene in Penang, renowned for pork dishes but doesn’t mean other food is to be passed over. To get your appetite moving, Oxtail Soup is the best bet, boiled with morsels of oxtails, heaps of herbs, celeries, tinge of pepper and paired with a slice of garlic bread. The oxtail is tender and juicy, it just melts in your mouth and the soup hits the right spot. Commodious indoor and outdoor seating and commendable service, worthwhile visit ensured.
