If you try finding this dish in Bandung, Indonesia, you’ll definitely have a hard time. Many misconceptions arise but it’s a true blue Johorean dish from Muar and the term actually means “mixed” or “paired” in Malay. At a glance, this wholesome dish might remind you of mee rebus but it’s in a whole different league of its own. Typically served piping hot, yellow noodles and eggs are drenched with a treacly soup made from shrimp paste, assorted spices, onions and fried shrimp then generously garnished with prawns, meats or fish cakes and handful of vegetables. We have scoured nooks and alleys for an ideal fix and these joints just had us at hello, now it’s been a daily obsession.

It’s easy to drive past this modest restaurant but it surely is your loss as you can expect one of the finest mee bandung in town. Not sure why it’s named as “banjir” which is literally translated to flood, yet the term fits the dish when it’s utterly flooded with fresh ocean goodness such as squid, prawns and cockles in a savoury broth and yellow noodles. The slurp-worthy broth is super good, to further awake the aftertaste on your palate, a glass of teh tarik is the best bet.
