In sultry tropical Malaysia which makes one perspire and thence reek (admit it! I do too), it is little wonder that thirst-quenching chilled milk tea has wildly surged in popularity to cool down the heat. Although milk tea is found in many cultures and thus differs greatly in the methods of preparation in each distinct (culture), with the composition of ingredients ranging from sugar or honey to cardamom or salt, today we shall be focusing predominantly on bubble tea, also known as "pearl milk tea" or "boba milk tea" for its sphere-shaped glutinous rice balls, invented in Taichung, Taiwan in the 1980's.

Gong Cha @ Suria KLCC
The debate over whether Gong Cha or Tealive serves the best quality bubble milk tea is an all-time high, and it is not difficult to see why. As the cheaper version of the two, some have even dubbed Gong Cha as being better value for money. Gong Cha's signature pearl milk tea has even been said to be as superb as the ones sold in Taiwan.

Each A Cup
Less popular than the rest of their bubble tea franchise counterparts, but if you want an alternative choice for your bubble tea fix, Each A Cup has a nice selection of milk tea drinks which will leave you desiring for more. A pretty neat choice would be chocolate milk tea with pearls, or honeydew milk tea with pearls. Better yet, opt for their Yoghurt Pops, that literally explodes in your mouth, oozing out all the pleasant goodness in your tongue.

hey, your cup serving may be petite here, but Koi The prides itself in the highest quality ingredients which have been ensured to go into every cute little cup served. The glutinous rice balls which sinks at the bottom beneath your tea is luscious, soft, and chewy... unlike the usual commercialised "bubbles" which are "plastic-ey" in texture. It is the usual quality vs. quantity debate -- for a small cup, you pay for quality. So dive down and try out the newest bubble tea outlet now opened in Malaysia!

If you want authentic Taiwanese desserts - hot and cold - and bubble milk tea without filter nor alteration in its original recipe just to cater to local taste buds, Snowflake is your best bet. It might be a tad sweet for taste buds who are well-acquainted with the local cendol, ais kacang and ABC, but this is the closest to Taiwanese special desserts which you can get here.
