Best Char Kuey Teow in Kuching

Written by Updated ago

Being one of the most popular street food in Penang, Char Kuey Teow is now famous all around Malaysia. Made of flat rice noodles stir-fried with shrimp, bloody cockles, Chinese lap cheong (sausage), eggs, bean sprouts, and chives in a mix of soy sauce, Char Kuey Teow is seasoned not only with the freshest of ingredients, but equally essential is the indefinable burnt aroma from stir-frying the noodles over very high heat in a well-seasoned Chinese wok. The delightful aroma is the “wok hei” or breath of wok. A great Char Kuey Teow signals you from blocks away; the mouth-watering fragrance fills the air and allures diners in from afar. While Char Kuey Teow can be found throughout Malaysia, the Penang version reigns supreme. However, have you tasted Kuching’s Char Kuey Teow? Let’s see if it can compete with the ones in Penang.

Located at Jalan Haji Taha, Abg Chak Penang Charkueh Tiaw is a small restaurant offering variety of local and western cuisine. However, there is one dish that will get you hooked instantly. The Char Kuey Teow served here is so special and delicious with a unique combination of Penang and Sarawak version. Big, fresh prawns, springy kuey teow, bean sprouts, and egg are the main ingredients of this dish. Comes in an adequately large portion, this bowl of goodness tastes almost the same as the one in Penang. Pssstt, did we tell you that their price range is super affordable, too?

They write their menu on a chalkboard. We're guessing the menu will change from time to time.

Having more than 20 stalls and 1 beverage parlour, Teh Tarik Cafeteria is the go to place for people who wants a lot of selection to choose from. From one end to the other, patrons can select all kinds of local treats including roti canai, nasi beryani, mee tampua, rojak, nasi ayam penyet, laksa Sarawak, laksa Penang, Bakso, and many more. One of the most recommended dish here is the char kuey teow. Their rich mixture of flat rice noodles, eggs, prawns, and bean sprouts makes it a close to perfect harmonising act of sweet, salty, crunchy and chewy. Although it is not the most photogenic and Instagram-worthy plate of char kway teow around, it does serve as a scrumptious, albeit unorthodox, alternative for your curious taste buds.

    Tips

Come early to make sure you get to taste the solok, frilled chicken and beef.

Yeow Kee is a breakfast hotspot for the locals. There are several cuisines served mainly Chinese cuisines such as mee sua, kampua, dim sum, Kuih, penang special food, wantan, kaya toast and many more. However, if you are looking for a good plate of char kuey teow, this is the place for you. The dish tastes more towards the salty side instead of sweet, and there was also a hint of spiciness from the peppers and sourness, which works really well. It is worth a visit if you would like to try a char kuey teow that is dry and spicy.

    Tips

It can get very crowded until you have to wait for your table.

Choon Choon Café is one of Kuching’s famous restaurant known for serving delightful Laksa Sarawak, Kolo Mee, Kueh Chap, and more. This pork-free eatery is probably the most popular choice for breakfast in the area. Despite the very popular laksa Sarawak, there is another underrated dish that you should try – char kuey teow. The kway teow, while soft and aromatic, can be too ‘spongy’ at times, but the ingredients are amzing. They are full of flavour and balanced the dish well, especially the beansprouts. Although the wok hei can be hardly noticeable, but the ingredients really alleviate the taste and are the main stars.

    Tips

Make sure you go before 11am or else there will be no laksa for you.

    Things to expect

A pork-free food premise that serves delightful local delights.
