Authentic, affordable and absolutely delicious - a good bowl of lontong is as good as it gets for a hearty breakfast or lunch. It's compressed rice cakes rolled into banana leaves and boiled till soft and chewy, then chopped into bite-sized morsels. Then comes the real deal, its ladened with coconut-based gravy loaded with crunchy greens and topped with tempeh, hard-boiled egg, fried tofu cubes and spoonful of sambal. The mildly flavoured rice cakes take full advantage of the flavoursome combination, offering a mouthful of texture and taste. Johor Bahru may pride as the place to be for a good serving of lontong, but these spots in Penang certainly can put up a tough fight.

Astaka Taman Tun SardonCertified
halalThis unassuming food court is home to a manner of breakfast and lunch favourites that are easy on your wallet too. It’s pretty common to witness lontong gracing up tables, being a dead giveaway that you should not miss out. Expect a handful of rice cakes drenched in vegetables-loaded gravy and slices of hard-boiled egg, chilli concoction and peanut sauce rounding up the delicious dish. What’s more, one can also add a spoonful of succulent squid sambal and fried anchovies for that additional oomph. If you’re a fan of spiciness, do yourself a favour, opt for extra chilli sambal.
