Among the intrinsic identities of authentic Malay cuisine is lontong, bite-sized rice cubes that are commonly drenched in a coconut-based gravy loaded with vegetables and topped with fried shaved coconut, tempeh, tofu cubes and a dollop of sambal. It might sound like a close cousin to ketupat but the rice is rolled inside banana leaves and meticulously boiled till the desired soft and chewy texture is achieved. Today, one can savour these chewy bites with a sheer variety of meats, seafood and vegetables too, somewhat a substitute to plain rice. It may not be as ubiquitous as they are in Johor Bahru, but we have scoured a number of restaurants in Subang Jaya that has lontong down-pat.

Bawang Merah
Bawang Merah is known to put the locals in a good mood for authentic Malay cuisine with a wide selection of dishes that are budget-friendly. The teeming crowd during lunch and dinners hours certainly attest to their reputation yet the cosy and spacious interior deals with it in style. Do justice to your visit with a bowl of lontong, among the frontrunners here. The rice morsels are ladled with simple vegetarian gravy and topped with fried tempeh and a dab of spicy sambal. Some patrons also add the signature squid sambal into the concoction, a big yes from us too.

Restoran Ubi Kayu USJ 9 TaipanCertified
halalThis full-of-life restaurant is one of few places where you can savour a good serving of lontong as soon as 7am. However don’t pull back looking at nasi lemak and nasi campur topping the orders, as the diced rice cakes are equally good. Generously portioned, the dense cubes are completely masqueraded with tawny-hued gravy, assorted vegetables, nuts, fried tempeh and tofu, boiled egg and dollop of homemade sambal. The variation of texture and flavour certainly complement the mild-flavoured rice cakes, and you’re always on cards to pair the balmy bowl with savoury sides like ayam masak merah and fried chicken.

Restoran Rivaayat
Restoran Rivaayat is a newcomer in the lontong scene yet has been making a promising name among the locals. Upon walking in, be amazed by the slew of scrumptious sides such as ayam percik, deep-fried fish topped with sambal and many more, and they sure work wonders with your lontong . The rice cubes hold a nice chewy texture, shrouded with vegetables laden curry, a scoop of sambal and halved boiled egg. Also, many regulars stick to a common rule of adding the sotong sambal onto the haystack for that extra oomph. If your tongue is overwhelmed with spiciness, tame it down with a bowl of ABC ais campur.
