Best Ayam Penyet in KL

Written by Updated ago

Javanese culture has always been an influence in Malaysian culture due to the migration of the Javanese people to this country hundreds of years ago. Ever since then, Malay food has always had a certain type of Indonesian flair to it. But recently, a certain Javanese dish has been winning the hearts of Malaysians and it goes by the name of…. drumroll please… Ayam Penyet. Here are the to-go places in KL for this smashing dish (no pun intended).

I have friends living in this area since they were kids and as far as Ayam Penyet goes according to them, nothing can beat the ones they serve at Ayam Penyet Ria. The skin of the fried chicken is so crispy yet the batter is not too thick, making it just nice and satisfying. Extra spicy sambal lovers will rejoice at the hotness of the sambal here but those who can’t bear that burning feeling, bear in mind that a little goes a long way.
    Tips

The parking can be a huge hassle as construction is still ongoing due to Wangsa Walk’s expansion, so a huge tip will be to park at Wangsa Walk’s parking lot. You may have to pay but it will spare you the time and frustration.

    Things to expect

The rice comes as a top up to the dish so you have to order them as two separate items. Aside from that, do expect some loud Indonesian rock music blaring from the stereo. You’d really feel like you are in Jakarta.

Order the Soda Gembira. It will literally make you happier.

The ayam penyet here is not the main attraction but the sambal is. Spicy yet addictive, it will make you order more even if your nose was getting runny. THAT is how addictive it is. However, I would prefer it more if the tempeh (soycake) was less dry. The location of this restaurant is pretty hard to miss as it sits above the infamous sole Burger King franchise in Wangsa Maju. Plus, just like Ayam Penyet Ria, it is a walking distance from Wangsa Walk.
    Tips

When ordering, make sure to specify the thigh part as the servers will just serve the ribs part initially here.

    Things to expect

There is no outdoor seating here so smokers, you have been warned. Plus, the interior is very clean so do not worry about flies & whatnot distracting you from your food.

    Best with

Teh O Ais. Do not order anything milky or your tummy will surrender before you even finish your food.
