Yu Yi serves BKT that is embedded with history. From a modest stall in 1984, YuYi has expanded to three restaurants. Their BKT is affordable but most importantly delicious. Their broth is light with a slightly sweet aftertaste as most teow chew style BKT are. Their meat is equally cut into similar sizes with fresh mushrooms and tofu. They also have a variety of sides to feed a family. Their sides include Yellow-Wine Chicken, Steamed Fish Head, Pepper Soup Stomach, Thick Soy Sauce Pork Leg, Sweet and Sour Pork Leg, and more!

Nam Seng Bak Kut Teh is another great place to be if you're craving for pork. Quite amazingly, they're famed for their ribs instead of other cuts of meat. Just that alone in a bowl of piping hot soup somehow just makes everything a whole lot better. That is not to say that ribs are the only way to go, but it certainly is well worth the choice when you're choosing for your cut of meat. All and all, the broth poise a rich, sweet and delicate flavour while the pork pieces are all done to tender perfection.

Bak Kut Teh Kim Tek is a breakfast BKT restaurant in Kepong Indah that serves a thick, gelatinous claypot Bak Kut Teh that is worth waking up for. They are often packed as early as the shutters are open; their broths are cooked in large pots and have an intense meaty infused flavour. The sai kuat or also known as small bone, will practically fall off the bone at the slightest touch. For optimal joy to your palate, throw in Chinese crullers and fried bean curd cubes into the mix. Set your alarm and get up early for this as they start their daily operation at 5 in the morning!

Fatty BKT at Old Klang Road is one of those stalls you might miss if you’re driving by. Inside there are three stations that specialise in different food. There are stir-fried dishes, Cantonese-styled steamed fish head and bak kut teh. They open at 6pm and close at 5am. This would be the perfect place for those out for supper or trying to sober up. Their broth can be salty and should be eaten with rice. Order up their tender small intestines, wine chicken and pig's tail. A satisfying BKT experience.

There are plenty of things to savour in Imbi, and Ah Hee Bak Kut Teh is certainly one of them. On first glance, the restaurant may not look like much with its green signage and rather obscure looking interior. However, all that will change once you've tried out their bak kut teh. To start, the broth is nice and clear, though not translucent, it isn't as murky. Despite that, it still packs in a good amount of flavour which many other restaurant fails to deliver. A dry variant is also available, so just pick your poison.

The Claypot Bak Kut Teh at The Barn certainly delivers in terms of aroma. When you first pop the lid off the pot, steam with the smell of stewed pork pieces in an aromatic herb stew base hits you instantly. In terms of ingredients, this bowl has kept it fairly simple, with pork ribs, three-layer pork pieces, lean meat and Chinese lettuce. As far as flavour is concerned, this pot of herbal porcine stew skews to a lighter flavour as opposed to the rich and heavy flavours that are commonplace with this dish. It is also great that the flavour of the soup has been absorbed by all the ingredients. On top of that, the pork is soft, tender and easy to pull off the bone.

    Tips

Handle the pot carefully as it is very hot.

    Things to expect

A small bowl of rice and a side of garlic and chopped chillis in soy sauce are served alongside the pot.

    Best with

Add garlic and chopped chillis in soy sauce for more of a kick and added flavour.

Ka Ka Bak Kut Teh is known as one of the most popular BKT restaurants in Kepong. They have been unofficially crowned as the 'King of BKT' and they have a pretty solid reason to that. The thick, rich and savoury sauce with a minor herbal undertone works well with those who can't accept the herbal-ish essence, but still flavourful enough to pack a punch. It is also served with generous chunks of pork, according to what kind of cuts you enjoy most; be it fat, lean or mix. All and all, this is a great place to enjoy the dry-form bak kut teh.
