This crowd-rousing restaurant prides itself as the inventor of Johor’s signature dish, San Lau fried bee hoon and the taste and texture do complement the statement. Living by the rule, the top portion of the noodles is caramelised thanks to the press frying technique and spearing into the alluring bed reveals the soft and flavour-packed strands beneath. Moreover, they are never skimp on the ingredients, the ratio of sliced pork, prawns, eggs, fish cakes, and vegetables are commendable. Dip in their murky-red sauce, which has a tinge of sourness from the lime juice.

A famed and fabled restaurant when it comes to fresh seafood and San Lou fried bee hoon. Plenty of restaurants are now following their “press fried” style stirring, yet pioneers are always second to none. After the noodles are tossed and stirred with soy sauce, eggs, greens and seafood goodness such as fish cakes and prawns, they are pressed with a steel spatula on the scorching wok that gives it a slightly charred layer. Besides adding texture, the noodles soaks up all the juices made from the seafood broth. The mishmash of charred and spongy strands is heavenly. The portion is good for sharing but being greedy isn’t a crime when the food is dead-drop delicious.

    Kin Wah Coffee

This unsung little eatery is a common spot for locals to kick start their day with a range of cheap and delish meals, which includes fragrant fried bee hoon. The bee hoon is infused with tomyam flavour and stir-fried with crunchy vegetables. Well, now comes the twist, as curry loaded with assorted vegetables is ladled onto the bed of noodles. Sound quirky yet the curry is mildly spiced and the eggplant, long beans, and cabbage chunks add additional texture and taste. Best paired with a cup of black coffee.
