Once upon a
time, traditional gui ling gao (Chinese herbal jelly) recipe used to be made
from a boiled tortoise or turtle shell. As cruel as it sounds, thankfully that isn’t the
case anymore. Today, gui ling gao is produced using different herbal
concoctions simmered for hours until it becomes a jelly-like texture. Gui ling
gao can be served hot or cold, and each serving usually comes with honey or sugar syrup. Why? Because gui ling gao tastes like a bitter
Chinese medicine if you don’t add a drizzle of syrup for sweetening purposes.
Unless of course, if you can tolerate the bitter aftertaste of the gui ling gao
jelly! Now, long story short, here is where you can find refreshing yet
nourishing gui ling gao around KL area.

The Zun Express
Known for its MSG-free soup varieties, this Eu Yan Sang-owned subsidiary restaurant also housed a delectable choice of traditional Chinese desserts such as soya bean curd and bird's nest. Not to forget also is the classic choice of gui ling gao. It has that bitter goodness that characterises a good gui ling gao jelly dessert. Fret not, it comes with a honey syrup for that added taste of sweetness. Alternatively, there’s even a gui ling gao with a side serving of ice cream.

Chong Kok Wah Tuo Guan
Originated from Ipoh, this herbal dessert shop housed a variety of gui ling gao that comes in either original, menthol or pearl flavour. The original gui ling gao has a modest kick of bitterness, but it is the menthol version that packs the most punch. Thanks to the minty flavour, it has a nice cooling aftertaste that soothes your throat upon every bite of the herbal jelly.
