Best Hokkien (Prawn) Mee in Penang

Written by Updated ago

Not to be confused with the Hokkien Mee in Klang Valley, Hokkien Mee in Penang actually refers to prawn mee. It is a pride of the Penangites, and can be mostly found in the hawker stalls and coffee shops on the island. A good bowl of Hokkien Mee has to have a soup base that is just right - aromatic and flavourful, with a hint of sweetness as well as spiciness, and not forgetting essential ingredients like prawns, pork varieties, noodles, bean sprouts, kangkung and half-boiled egg. Check out these spots for the best Hokkien Mee in Penang!

Unlike most traditional Hokkien Mee stalls, here you are required to place your order using an order chit and the restaurant is easily spotted with a bright red signboard. As far as the taste is concerned, the prawn is decent enough with hint of sweetness and not being overly spicy. If that’s not enough, you can choose to top up with various add-ons including egg, mee/bee hoon, pig’s intestines, pork ribs and prawns for a fraction of a price! The portion may not be the biggest but most importantly, the flavours come together well.

    Tips

You have an option to sit inside or at the outdoor area.

You certainly wouldn't spend a lot of time dining here, for it is a very small stall with limited seating and half the time, you'll either be queuing or waiting for your food. Having said that, once it arrives, you'll know that your efforts are paid off. The noodles are cooked consistently through and the broth is excellent. It is distinctively red and murky, topped with beansprouts, full-boiled egg and a handful of kangkung and fried shallots. A spoonful of sambal will also be provided for those who likes it a little more spicy. All and all, though this stall may be small, they actually serve pretty good Hokkien Mee.

    Tips

    Cash only.
