Best Porridge in KL

Written by Updated ago

A dish typically made with a simple mixture of rice and water and boiled until it softens, rice porridge (or congee) is one of the traditional Chinese foods with a history spanning thousands of years. Plain porridge is bland to the taste and is often served with an assortment of side dishes, while porridge cooked with additional ingredients such as meat, fish and flavourings are served as a meal on its own. Prior to serving, various types of condiments such as white pepper, soy sauce and sesame oil are sprinkled on top of a bowl of piping-hot porridge to boost its overall taste.

Believe it or not, this famous porridge stall has been around in Chinatown (or better known by locals as Petaling Street) since 1949. Hon Kee has even been featured on television and has received rave reviews from various local newspapers. So, what’s the big deal about this place? Loa Yau Kee PorridgeNon halal 01f78899591256b47a2708a65f6538333b86089a30fbd22545a41deece4ea490

At first glance, the little food cart of Loa Yau Kee located in the busy intersection between Jalan Tun H. S. Lee and Jalan Tun Tan Siew Sin looks like an ordinary stall. But beyond its mundane look, Loa Yau Kee happens to be one of the oldest porridge stalls in the Petaling Street area. The secret to its enduring existence lies in its porridge itself, which is boiled to perfection to give it a smooth and viscous texture. There are only three dishes you can choose to go with the porridge – poached chicken, raw fish slices and pork innards. While the choices may be limited, these uncomplicated pairings are a true delight to liven up this humble bowl of congee.
    Tips

Feeling hot? You can opt to savour your meal in the comfort of an air-conditioned restaurant: Soong Kee Beef Ball Mee which backs this tiny stall.
